Abstract: »Navarrese maids were involved in a significant number of legal proceedings related to rape or breaches of marriage promises before the Navarrese civil courts in the 16th and 17th centuries. This study seeks to investigate the circumstances under which these incidents occurred, examine the profiles of the plaintiffs and defendants, and analyze the attitudes of the community and the judiciary. The maids approached the courts to file complaints against their aggressors. Consequently, judicial proceedings serve as valuable sources for exploring the collective mentality of the time, institutional practices, and the living conditions of maids who were victims of rape in 16th and 17th century Navarre.« (Source: Memoria y Civilización)
